International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination: Humanity not Racism

Racial discrimination and the legacies of slavery and colonialism continue to destroy lives, preventing billions of people from enjoying their full human rights and freedoms. Around 200 million people identifying themselves as being of African decent live in the America’s. Many millions more live in other parts of the world, outside of the African continent.

This year’s theme is linked to the International Decade for People of African Descent, which spans the timeframe from 2015 to 2024. In proclaiming this decade, the international community is recognizing that people of Africa descent represent a distinct group, whose human rights must be promoted and protected. The 2024 theme is “A Decade of Recognition, Justice, and Development: Implementation of the International Decade for People of African Descent”.

The commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination holds significant importance in acknowledging the historical injustices, promoting understanding, and advocating for a more inclusive and equitable society.

This has been one of the main goals of GRACARO over the years, to create an inclusive, just and equitable society for all, through its programs. From health outreaches to community engagement and empowerment, the organization hopes to create an equitable society for all, thus bringing hope to the hopeless.

The day serves as a call to action to confront racial prejudices, promote inclusivity, and advance social progress towards a world where diversity is celebrated, equality is upheld, and every individual is treated with dignity and respect. By recognizing and honoring this day, we reaffirm our commitment to combating racism, fostering understanding, and building a more just and equitable society for present and future generations.

By actively participating in initiatives, promoting understanding, and advocating for equality and inclusivity, individuals can contribute to creating a world free from racial discrimination where diversity is celebrated, and everyone is treated with dignity and respect.
