As part of activities to mark this year’s world cancer day commemoration, GRACARO has embarked on a one-week sensitization campaign empowering hearts, spreading hope, and educating community members on what the cancer disease is all about, the preventions, the different kinds of the disease, etc.
This was at the Ntenefor neighborhood at up station Bamenda with about 30participants made up of male, female, children, the young, old and persons with disabilities inclusive where talks were held between GRACARO staff and those present.
The world commemorates world cancer day every year on February 4, a day set aside by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), to raise awareness, educating people about cancer detection, treatment and prevention.
According to the World Health Organization, this year’s theme, “Close the cancer gap; Together we challenge those in power”, encompasses the global demand for leaders to prioritize and invest in cancer prevention and care in order to achieve a just and cancer-free world. The day seeks to reinforce all persons and groups’ universal right to health. Regardless of socio-economic status, geographic location, age and gender; every person must be afforded an equal chance at the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.
Symptoms of cancer include unexplained weight loss, fatigue, persistent pain, changes in skin such as yellowing or darkening with common risk factors being tobacco use, low fruit and vegetable intake, harmful use of alcohol and lack of physical activity as revealed by staff of GRACARO.
Globally, there was an estimated 20 million new cases of cancer and 9.7 million deaths from cancer in 2022. It is estimated that, the US will see just over 2 million new cancer cases in 2024, as well as over 611,000 cancer deaths. About 1 in 5 people develop cancer in their lifetime, approximately 1 in 9 men and 1 in 12 women die from the disease.
On this day, let us remember that we can make simple lifestyle changes, stay informed about screening, and support each other to fight cancer and build a healthier future for all.
