The international Day of Social Justice is observed annually on February 20 to raise awareness about the importance of promoting social justice and addressing the various inequalities that persists in societies worldwide. Established by the United Nations (UN), this day serves as a reminder that social justice is a fundamental principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence. It highlights the needs for equal rights, opportunities, and treatment of all individuals, regardless of their background, gender, race, religion or socio-economic status.
Achieving social justice requires addressing systematic barriers and biases that perpetuate inequality, such as unequal access to education, healthcare, employment and justice. This year’s celebration is commemorated under the theme: Bridging Gaps, Building Alliances. According to the theme, some ministries and organization are striving to ensure that, they build a society where everyone has equal rights and no one left behind.
The Regional Delegation of Decentralization and Local Development North West Region (MINDDEVEL) is one of those ministries working hard to see that persons in the society are given equal rights and privileges especially persons living with disabilities.
As part of commemorative activities to mark this day’s celebration, Grace Charitable and Rehabilitation Organization (GRACARO) visited MINDDEVEL to know what they are doing as far as social justice is concerned. It was discovered that, MINDDEVEL works through councils where they encourage the municipal authorities to include persons living with disabilities in their activities as well as taking into consideration that there are such people when building structures in the society.
In the councils, when recruiting personnel, they also take into consideration persons living with disabilities as they are considered as a special class. They are normal people just like every other person and should be involved in societal activities as revealed by the Regional Chief of Service for MINDDEVEL, Mr Jack Sentie.
In this light, he says, “We can make sure that if there are recruitments, we ensure persons living with disabilities are included”, as he testifies, they have personnel who have disability and are actively working. This signifies that, social justice is well implemented.
The International Day of Social Justice therefore serves as a global platform for promoting equality, fairness, and inclusivity. It reminds us of the importance of addressing systematic inequalities and working collectively to build a more just and equitable world. By actively engaging in efforts to promote social justice, we can contribute to a society where every person can thrive, regardless of their background or circumstances. Let us seize this opportunity to reflect, educate, and take action to create a more inclusive and socially just future for all.
